Arthur Twining Hadley was born in New Haven, Connecticut on April 23, 1856. He graduated from Yale in 1876, and pursued graduate studies in political economy at the University of Berlin. In 1879 Hadley returned to Yale and worked as a tutor in Greek, logic, Roman law, and German until 1883. Alfred Whitney Griswold was born in Morristown, New Jersey, on October 27, 1906. He received a B.A. degree from Yale in 1929 and a Ph.D. in 1933. Griswold held various academic positions in history and government and international relations at Yale from 1933-1950.
